Following her graduation from the University of Texas at Dallas in Richardson in 2002 with a BS in Biology, she attended the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University. She earned a Master of Science degree in Veterinary Parasitology in 2004, and published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles in the field of tick-borne diseases.

Dr. Carnes grew up in Highland Village where, thanks to her dog, Sadie, she discovered her passion for veterinary medicine at a young age. During high school, she began her career at Animal Medical Center of Highland Village as a kennel technician. Dr. Carnes received her undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M University in 2013.
